Knowing the Savior and Making Him Known

Tuesday 6/9/2026 Devotional

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
1 Corinthians 9:27

Paul has been talking in this chapter of the Bible about the need for self-discipline. He compares facing temptation to a runner training for a race or a boxer getting ready for the next match, and he points out that “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.”

The World, the Flesh, and the Devil will tell you that you can never be happy unless you indulge all your fantasies, fulfill your desires and satisfy all your urges. God says that “we are tempted when we are lured and enticed by our own desires;” that “desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”

The World, the Flesh, and the Devil don’t have your success in mind. They are your enemies. They’re betting on the other guy. Their advice is not good.

God says, “bring your body into submission; discipline it; deny yourself, take up your cross and follow Jesus,” and He’s on your side.

Paul reminds us that an athlete does all this just to obtain a perishable reward: a wreath, a ribbon, a belt buckle, a moment of fame. But they train hard, deny themselves many things, and keep their eyes always on that goal. You’re looking for an imperishable, everlasting, eternal prize. Fix your eyes on that, and take up the cross. It’s so worth it!

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing me how it’s done. Thank You for disciplining Yourself to achieve my salvation. Thank You for inviting me in to this. Now, Lord, give me the strength I need for today’s run. Amen.
