Knowing the Savior and Making Him Known

Monday 11/17/2025 Devotional

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
1 Thessalonians 4:13

How do you bring comfort to someone whose loved one has died with no hope of heaven, no faith in God, no idea of what happens after this life? The pain of that loss is unbearable.

Just last Saturday I found myself praying with someone who had lost three family members within a few weeks of each other, all to drug overdoses, and she had no idea where they are now.

People will say, “Well, he’s in a better place.” Is he? According to the Bible there are two possibilities and one of them isn’t better, no matter how bad life was here.

But when we know that the person died trusting in Jesus, assured of God’s forgiveness, this verse brings unspeakable comfort. No matter the circumstances of their death, we know they’re truly in a better place, far better than the best this life can offer.

I’ve lost several dear friends and family members in the last few years, and have others who are close to death’s door right now. Having God’s assurance of what we can’t see changes the pain of loss into the joy of hope, the blessed assurance of seeing each other again in that much better place. That assurance comforts us as we draw near to death’s door ourselves, and it comforts us who are left behind, even in the pain of our loss.

Lord Jesus, thank You for the assurance of the forgiveness You have paid for, the promise of redemption, and a home prepared for us in heaven. Thank You for the promise of a resurrection and eternal life. Thank you for the comfort it brings us, who know You, here and now. Amen!
