They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons; they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was polluted with blood. Psalm 106:37-38
Psalm 106 details how the people of ancient Israel disobeyed God and brought judgment on themselves. One of the things that God points out as an extreme low point of immoral depravity, was their murdering of their own innocent children.
God loves children. They are always seen as a blessing given by God, no matter the circumstances of their conception. God abhors a nation that kills its own babies. He can hardly be expected to bless such a people.
“The anger of the Lord was kindled against His people, and He abhorred His heritage; He gave them into the hand of the nations, so that those who hated them ruled over them.”
Psalm 106:40-41
The consequences of such abhorrent behavior are severe and painful: “Their enemies oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their power.”
Psalm 106:42
Israel was defeated, lost its independence, and finally was overthrown, completely destroyed and ceased to exist as a nation, just as God had warned them would happen if they didn’t turn from their evil behavior.
But years later, when in exile they turned in humble repentance to God, they found Him waiting, ready to forgive.
“For their sake He remembered His covenant, and relented according to the abundance of His steadfast love.”
Psalm 106:45
We all, as a once Christian nation that has allowed this to go on, must return in humble repentance and seek God’s forgiveness if we want His blessing and protection.
Dear brother, dear sister, if you have been involved in this shedding of innocent blood, please remember this: God only waits for repentance, and He promises forgiveness and restoration. He will remember His covenant of forgiveness for Jesus’ sake, and receive you in His love as you come to Him, seeking it.
“Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the nations, that we may give thanks to Your holy name and glory in Your praise.” (Psalm 106:47)
Amen!
