I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
May my meditation be pleasing to Him, for I rejoice in the Lord.
Psalm 104:33-34
I want my meditation, the things that I think about, that I daydream about, the thoughts that fill me mind when I’m not actively concentrating on something else, to be pleasing to God.
That’s not the natural condition of the human mind. The things our thoughts revert to when we aren’t paying attention are usually not the things that please God. It’s much more common for our minds to reflexively revert to thoughts of lust, greed, anger and bitterness, revenge; to nursing our old hurts and resentments.
When I rejoice in God’s forgiveness for Jesus’ sake, thinking of all that He has done for me, remembering the prayers He has answered, all of those dark meditations are driven out. When I fill my mind with God’s promises and memories of His goodness, that mental darkness can’t be in the same headspace as the light of God’s Word.
One practical way to get there is to fill my heart with Christian music. The Bible says it this way: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Colossians 3:16
Father, deliver me from the dark meditations that the world, the flesh and the devil are so quick to crowd into my heart and mind. Fill my thoughts instead with joyful meditation on the things that are pleasing to You. Amen!
