Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.
1 Corinthians 12:1-2
Paul begins teaching about spiritual gifts by reminding the people of the Christian community in Corinth that the true God whom they have come to worship is not, like the idols they used to worship, mute. Those false gods were incapable of communication because they were, well, false! They were figments of human imagination. They weren’t real.
But the real God, the one and only true God that we worship, is capable of communicating with His people. He speaks. He answers our prayers. And He communicates by His Holy Spirit through us imperfect human beings, whom He has graciously deigned to call members of His Body; He enables us to deliver gifts from Him to other members of His Body.
That means the He will communicate with you and deliver gifts that you need by means of other Christians, and He will communicate His gifts to other Christians through you at different times, according to the needs of the members of His Body as He sees fit.
The rest of the chapter goes into more detail about the nature of those spiritual gifts, but this one point has to be understood first of all: God is real, He is ready to communicate with you, and He will do that by sending gifts through each of us, you and me, at different times.
Lord, I know that You’re real and alive, and ready to speak. Help me to recognize and receive your gifts through other Christians, and enable me to be used as Your means of communication, to deliver Your loving messages to my brothers, today. Amen.
