Knowing the Savior and Making Him Known

Wednesday 7/16/2025 Devotional

And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor."
But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to Me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have Me. In pouring this ointment on My body, she has done it to prepare Me for burial.
“Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."
Matthew 26:8-13

The disciples were scandalized over this woman’s profligate behavior. Just think of all the good they could have done if the money that expensive ointment represented had been given to them, instead of just pouring it out on Jesus!

We still haven’t understood the concept of giving something to God.We want it to be given to the church, or better yet, to our particular corner of the Church, to the work that wecontrol, so that we can do good things with it. But isn’t God a far better administrator than we are, of what’s given to Him?

Sometimes when God has called us to a particular kind of service in His Kingdom, we become so focused on our work that we begin to think that it’s the only thing that matters, the most important thing in God’s Kingdom.

Beloved, never criticize the way that someone else pours their love out to God. Trust Him to lead them to serve Him as He wants them to do, and trust Him to give us what’s needed for our small part of His work, too.

Father, I can only see my corner of Your Kingdom, but You see it all. Thank You for the assurance that what I need will be provided at the right time, because You are faithful. Give me a heart, like this precious woman, of extravagant love for You. Amen.
