Lot’s wife turned to look back with longing over the city of Sodom as it burned. God had had enough and had finally rained down fire and sulphur from heaven to wipe the city off the map because of the terrible wickedness of the people there. Only Lot and his family would be delivered, through the prayers of his Uncle Abraham.
The Bible calls Lot a righteous man and tells us how he was grieved by the wicked behavior of his neighbors. But it also tells us that he had chosen to live in Sodom because of the economic opportunities he found there.
His daughters were engaged to be married to two of the wicked young men who were destroyed that day. His wife had friends there, and so as they fled, contrary to the specific instructions God had given them to not even look back, she hesitated, paused, looked back, and was overtaken by the destruction, herself.
Don’t look back! Make a clean break with the old ways. Don’t look back with longing on the sinful life you’re leaving behind. Run for your life and accept the deliverance and salvation that the Lord offers you. Life awaits; don’t miss it! Sing it: “Free at last; free at last. Thank God Almighty, I’m free at last!”
Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to You. Give me the new life you’ve promised, and help me to not look back, even for a moment. Amen.
