For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a High Priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
Hebrews 7:26
Jesus, the Messiah, the “Anointed One.” The Greek translation of this word was “Christós,” which is where we got the English word “Christ.”
In the Bible there were three offices that were established by anointing a man with oil: the prophet, the priest, and the king. Oil was used in other ways, of course, but this was a special use, setting a man apart to hold one of these three offices. From the moment of his anointing, the Spirit of God was on that man to lead, guide and empower him, and would be working through Him.
The Bible tells that Jesus was anointed, not just with oil but with the Holy Spirit. He is the ultimate Prophet, Priest and King; the fulfillment of all three of these offices that foreshadowed Him throughout the Old Testament, as prophetic pictures of Him, the real Anointed One.
The prophets, priests and kings that came before Him, even the best of them, were imperfect, sinful men. But this One, anointed not symbolically but really, is perfect and continues to hold His office forever: the Anointed One, the Prophet, Priest and King of the Kingdom of God.
Lord Jesus Christ; Adonay, Yeshuah haMoshiach, You are God’s last Word, the final Prophet. You are the High Priest who lives forever to intercede for me. You the King of the Kingdom of God, into which You have called me. I worship You, my Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
