The world wants to believe that the universe is eternal and that life will go on forever. At the same time we’re constantly being warned that the world is about to self-destruct unless we listen to somebody or other who has a plan to get everything from our own carbon footprint to cow farts under proper control and restore order to the universe.
Which one is true? They can’t both be right.
The Lord Jesus spoke about the end, too. But He spoke of the day when He will return and call an end to the order of creation. He told us that there will be a day of judgment when we will all give an account of our lives, and that we should live in readiness for that day, that moment, so as not to be taken by surprise when it comes. But He also told us not to believe everything we hear about the ability of man to bring it about.
Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
Mark 13:30-31
The world will come to an end, but not by the hand of man. The one who created it will be the one to end it, and He keeps His promises.
Thank You, Father, for the comfort of knowing that only You can make that call. My life, the universe, and time itself are in Your hand. Lord, help me to live as one who waits for Your return, wide awake, faithful, and ready to receive You, no matter what is going on around me.
