The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him. Yet He is actually not far from each one of us...
Acts 17:24-28
The Apostle Paul was invited to reason with the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers at the Aeropagus in ancient Athens. In its day, the Areopagus was the epicenter of science and philosophy, with all the aspects, both positive and negative, of the mindset that we find on University campuses today.
He treated both groups with respect, complimented them on their sincere desire to be wise and good, and invited them to come and really know the God their hearts longed for.
Some laughed in arrogant derision, some pretended to be interested but politely put him off, and a few listened, responded, and found their lives changed in ways they probably never expected.
I’ve often wondered about Dionysius the Aeropagite. He was apparently a well-known figure at that intellectual venue, and became one of the very first Christians in Athens. How did his life change after meeting Jesus that day?
God is never far from any of us. He’s ready to come in, as soon as we turn to Him, and our life changes from that moment on.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me.
Revelation 3:20
Thank You, Lord, for being within reach, ready to be known by me, no matter who or where I think I am. Amen.
