Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you…
1 Peter 4:12
The fiery trial takes many forms. Sometimes it’s a fiery trial of temptation. Other times it’s a test of social pressure: that can be intense, as our friends and peers look at us as something strange when we don’t go along with their sinful behavior, and ridicule us for it. Sometimes it’s a fiery trial of persecution, when we’re threatened with real physical danger because of our stand for Jesus.
But it shouldn’t surprise us, however it comes. The Lord Jesus told us it would happen, and the Bible is full of warnings that it will come and words of comfort to strengthen us as we go through it.
This chapter ends with one of those comforting words: “Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.” (I Peter 4:19)
Trust in God, and do the right thing. It’s that simple.
Lord, You’ve warned me that fiery trials would come. You’ve taken me through some already, and you’ve been faithful through them all, even when I have not. Thank You for Your forgiveness, and for setting limits to the tests You allow me to face. Give me strength for today. I trust my soul to You; help me to do the right thing. Amen.
